Church of St. George in Horní Slavkov
Category: Religious Monuments Region: Sokolov and its surroundings Town: Horní Slavkov
The fortress-type Gothic church of St. George is the most valuable monument in Horní Slavkov. The original building is said to be founded already in the 13th century. The late-Gothic church we can see in Horní Slavkov today was built only in the early 16th century. It underwent a Baroque reconstruction in the 18th century and it probably lost most of its fortifications and one tower then.
The rib vault with Lierne ribs has been preserved in the interior of this one-nave building, as well as a Renaissance choir loft and a baptismal font, a late-Gothic sculpture group of the Mount of Olives and 14 epitaphs from the 16th century.
The Church of St. George is now being slowly reconstructed after years of decay. Due to these works only the prism-shaped tower is accessible, which will offer a view of the historical part of the town and its vicinity to you.
Opening hours
The church tower is accessible on the weekends from July to September or after an arrangement by phone (+420 352 350 674).
