Church of St. Michael the Archangel, Ostrov
Category: Religious Monuments Region: Karlovy Vary and its surroundings Town: Ostrov
In the immediate vicinity of the Holy Precinct and the beautiful chateau park in Ostrov there you can find the St. Michael’s Church, which is a typical example of sacral architecture of the Saxony type.
The church, originally dedicated to St. Nicolas, was established here in the 13th century. The entrance portal tympanum with blind tracery and the rib vault of the sacristy have been preserved from this period. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1568 - 1572 after a destructive fire and then several times during the 17th century. The church was completely reconstructed at the end of the 20th century.
Renaissance tombstones have been preserved in the interior of the St. Michael’s Church, the most precious of them being the Schlik epitaph from 1521. The movable equipment and furniture of the church come mostly from the mid-18th century. Since 2011 the believers can pray by a reliquary with a drop of blood of the Pope John Paul II. It is one of mere two relics of the deceased Pope to be found in the Czech Republic.
