Hot Spring Colonnade in Karlovy Vary
Category: Spa Architecture Region: Karlovy Vary and its surroundings Town: Karlovy Vary
The functionalist structure of the Hot Spring Colonnade (Vřídelní kolonáda) was built between 1969 and 1975. However, it was preceded by several other buildings housing the richest and warmest spring of Karlovy Vary, the Hot Spring (Vřídlo). The first Baroque building from the 16th century was superseded by an Empire colonnade. After its demolition, a cast-iron structure was built and later on replaced by a makeshift wooden colonnade. Surprising for most of the visitors is the fact that the most interesting part of this building can be found underground. Under the floor of the colonnade are placed pumps, distribution and thermal regulation systems of thermal water. Another place you can visit under the Hot Spring Colonnade is the rooms where aragonite slowly covers the Karlovy Vary souvenirs. To see the Hot Spring underground with a guide, purchase your guided tour tickets in the hall.
