Libá Castle & Chateau

Category: Castles Region: Cheb, Františkovy Lázně and their surroundings Town: Františkovy Lázně

The early Gothic Liebenstein castle was established as the seat of the Liebenstein family of the Cheb ministerial family in the mid-13th century on the elevated highlands in the south-eastern part of the village of Liebenstein. Over the years, the castle has been rebuilt and refined several times. At the beginning of the 18th century, the medieval castle was owned by the Zedwitz, rebuilt into a comfortable, representative Baroque chateau. During the second half of the 20th century, however, the unused castle complex gradually collapsed and turned into ruins. Since 1991 the building has been in private hands and it is under overall reconstruction. In 2012, the project Run Time of the Castle of Libá started from the ROP Northwest Subsidy and in 2014 it was successfully completed including the access to the finished part of the castle.
