Loket Castle

Region: Karlovy Vary and its surroundings Town: Loket

Loket Castle has stood on the bank of the Ohře River near Karlovy Vary since the beginning of the 13th century. The Gothic castle of Loket used to be a significant strategic place where the Czech King Wenceslas I used to welcome state visits. The Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV was imprisoned here during his early childhood as well and he enjoyed returning here often in his adult age. Other members of the Luxembourg family used to stay here too.

Loket Castle offers a number of interesting items. The most popular parts of the exhibition are the castle prison with an authentic exhibition of torture instruments, a museum of weapons, and a porcelain exhibition. There are also several legends relating to the castle, e.g. the legend about Gottstain - the ruler of the Loket rocks, stones and underground, the burgrave-under-a-spell, or the dragon in the castle tower.
