Mining Museum in Krásno
Category: Technical Monuments Region: Sokolov and its surroundings Town: Sokolov
The Krásno Mining Museum is situated on the site of the historical Vilém (German: Wilhelm) tin mine. An ore preparation plant building, a workshop building, a head frame and shaft building, an engine house, a gate-keeper’s house and one of the oldest transformer stations on our territory have been preserved on the grounds of the Vilém Mine.
The former preparation plant serves as the main building of the open-air mining museum, which covers an area of several hectares. The museum itself is complemented by numerous remnants of mining and ore processing activities in the surroundings. The main attraction is the steam-hoisting machine from the Marie Mine dating back to 1897, as well as an exposition mapping the history of brown coal mining from 19th century up to the present. The display in the neighbouring room presents miners' ceremonial uniforms and exhibits pertaining to mine surveying. The exposition on the second floor is dedicated to the mineralogy and geology of Slavkovský les (Slavkov Forest). An exposition of ore deposits extracted in the Czech Massif after the year 1945 is also worthwhile.
The head frame and shaft building, the engine house, transformer station and machine shops of the Vilém Mine are also open to the public. A mine train will take you on a ride through an adit accessible to visitors.
