Soos National Nature Reserve

Region: Cheb, Františkovy Lázně and their surroundings

Unique and one of a kind in Central Europe, the Soos National Nature Reserve is located to the north of Františkovy Lázně. The location was originally a salt-water lake, which has gradually transformed into peat bogs and mineral salt marshes over time. You may find traces of volcanic activity, namely moffettes – mud volcanoes emitting pure carbon dioxide, as well as numerous mineral springs. The remarkable biotopes are the home of a vast number of protected animal species, wetland plants, or halophytes.

In case you were wondering about the meaning of the word "Soos", it is not an abbreviation but it denotes a swamp in the German dialect of the area of Cheb.

A 1.2 km long planked nature trail with a number of instructional stops leads through the nature reserve. Visitors may also find a geopark, a museum with natural history and paleontological exhibits, a display of life-size prehistoric reptiles, the "Avian World of the Cheb Region" exposition, and a fallow-deer preserve.
