Basalt “Organ Pipes” near Hlinky
Category: Points of Interest Region: Karlovy Vary and its surroundings Town: Hlinky
The basalt organ pipes formation can be found in the Žlutice area near the municipality of Hlinky. It is a small wall quarry, halfway opening a basalt effusion with columnar fracturing. The quarry wall thus forms the typical basalt “organ pipes” which are quite unique in this area. The effects of constant erosion can be observed on the wall, caused in great extent by weather and gradually reducing the wall.
The area of about half acre surrounding the organ pipes has been a protected area since 1997.
