Cheb Museum

Category: Museums Region: Cheb, Františkovy Lázně and their surroundings Town: Cheb

The Museum of the town of Cheb was opened in the former Town House, one of the oldest burgher houses in the town square in Cheb, so called Pachelbel’s House after the most famous of its owners, on 15 May 1874. It is one of the oldest regional museums in Bohemia. With its app. 100,000 pieces of collectibles, rich secondary documentation funds to the history of the Cheb Region and an extensive study library it is one of the most important museums in the Region of Karlovy Vary.

The new art and historical exhibition will introduce rich history of the town and region to the visitors, as well as the art and crafts collection of the museum, with e.g. the Eger antependium (an altar decoration embroidered by beads) from the 14th century, Gothic and Baroque sculptures and a sample of the Cheb relief inlay with allegories of Evening, Morning, Day and Night from the workshop of J.K. Haberstumpf being of special interest. The preserved parts of the altarpiece from nearby Ostroh (Seeberg) from the late 15th century belong to the prestigious exhibits. The altarpiece is formed by the sculpture of Lamentation of Christ and the altar wings with painting on wood with scenes from the Way of the Cross.
