Gastronomy - Renowned Specialties

Category: Discover

The city of Karlovy Vary along with the whole Region of Karlovy Vary is well-known not only for its spa services, but also for a wide range of gastronomic delights. There are a number of products that please the taste buds of visiting tourists. In addition, they became popular souvenirs.

Becherovka Herbal Liqueur

For the majority of visitors, it is probably Becherovka that springs to mind when the city’s name gets mentioned. This unique herbal liqueur was first produced by pharmacist Josef Becher in the early 19th century. Originally, it was used as stomach drops and it was called The Karlovy Vary Bitter or Herbal Bitter. The name Becherovka and its selling as a liqueur in the characteristic flat green bottles came much later.

Today, you can enjoy the traditional Becherovka either pure or in the form of popular mixed drinks. The way of making this drink is a closely guarded secret. If you wish to learn more, feel free to explore the Becherovka exposition in the local Jan Becher Museum. For more information on the museum, please visit >>

Carlsbad Oblaten

Ever since 1856, one cannot imagine Karlovy Vary without its inseparable Carlsbad Oblaten. The round, nice-smelling, hot, sweet, thin wafers with any of your favourite fillings can be bought literally on every corner. If you happen to like them, as most visitors do, you can take them home with you as a tasty souvenir.
