Category: Cultural and Social Events

The idea of organizing the Czech-German Festival Mitte Europa, Bavaria Bohemia Saxony dates back to the year 1990 as a response to the fall of the iron curtain and is based entirely on the Czech-German and German-German citizen initiative. It has its roots in personal biographies of the festival’s initiators – a Czech-German married couple of Czech art historian Ivana Thomaschke and German opera singer Prof. Thomas Thomaschke, and their friends. The initial intention was not to bring to life a new cultural festival, but to enable, by means of cultural events, meetings and cooperation especially of young people from the still divided Germany and Czechoslovakia at that time. Since 2004 the Czech- German Cultural Festival in the middle of Europe- Mitte Europa has been connecting 65 Bavarian, Czech and Saxon towns and villages, along ca. 400 kilometres of the Czech-German border, from Upper Palatinate, Upper Franconia, Western Bohemia, to the Vogtland, Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), to the Dresden area and Northern Bohemia. In geographical terms it joins together three Euro-regions- Euregio Egrensis, Euroregion Krušnohoří/Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains Region) and the Labe/Elbe Euroregion.

Every year, festival concerts accompanied by a truly plentiful variety of other cultural events take place in Czech and German partner towns and cities from mid June until early August.
