Nový Dvůr Monastery

Category: Religious Monuments Region: Toužim and its surroundings Town: Toužim

The Monastery of Our Lady in Nový Dvůr is located near Toužim. It was established in the place of the former Baroque agricultural farm in 2002. The Trappist monks who came to the Czech Republic from France had it reconstructed as their residence.

The original Baroque farm building constructed by the plans of K. I. Dientzenhofer was quite dilapidated before the arrival of the Trappists and only the western residential part could have been saved; the remaining three wings were replaced by new buildings which respect the original floor plan nevertheless. The minimalist church built by the plans of British architect John Pawson forms a dominant feature of the monastery.

You can visit the so called “guest house” in the monastery in Nový Dvůr, where you can see an exhibition of photographs and a short film describing the life of the Nový Dvůr monks (Quiet Space by Marie Šandová). Books and other small religious items are on display here as well. You will also find information about participation in the worship services here and you can buy the traditional French mustard made by the monks. You can even stay here for several days after arrangement ahead of time and experience the life of the monks.
