St. Mary Magdalene Church in Karlovy Vary In the centre of the spa zone of Karlovy Vary, in the immediate vicinity of the Hot Spring (Vřídlo), you can visit the Roman-Catholic Church of St. Mary Magdalene which belongs to the most important Czech monuments built in the spirit of the High Baroque. Its significance is also underlined by the fact that it was entered in the national cultural monument list in 2010.
History of the Church
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was erected in 1737 in place of the former Gothic church by the design of K. I. Dientzenhofer. The interior of the church is decorated mostly by mobile property and furniture from the 18th century. You can see a valuable altar picture, Baroque altar sculptures, Gothic Madonnas etc. here. To tour the church, you can take advantage of the service times. Worship services are celebrated here daily.
Underground Crypt
The underground of the church is interesting as well. There is an underground crypt with skeletal remains from the cancelled cemetery which surrounded the church until 1784. Besides a small charnel-house you can see other points of interest here as well – the Holy Sepulchre altar from special varieties of the local aragonite, Bible scenes of the Garden of Gethsemane and Calvary, a geological display etc. If you would like to see the underground crypt, you need to make arrangements ahead of time, for at least 5 people (tel.: +420 353 362 100).
