I am here Introduction > The Region of Karlovy Vary as a Tourist Destination > Towns and Municipalities > Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) was founded in the 14th century by King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. The healing power of the local thermal mineral springs has been exploited from the very beginning and the foundation of a spa soon followed. In more than 650 years, the Karlovy Vary spa treatment has gained repute all over the world. Its positive effects on the human organism are the primary reason why tens of thousands of people from around the globe visit the spa every year.
Apart from spa treatment, the city may boast an abundant variety of unique historic sites and points of interests, such as the Mill Colonnade, the Hot Spring, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul, the Diana Lookout, the Municipal Theatre and many more.
Every year, thousands of people come to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which is held regularly in the first week of July.
